Hollywood Inspired Studio and Winter Session {Jeni}

Potsdam Based Photographer: Natalie’s Studio | Beauty

What a creative session for Jeni!  I was so excited when Jeni came to me with her vision for the photo session.  During the consultation Jeni, her mom and I chatted about what persona she wanted to portray.  Jeni is a local college student and had just gotten this gorgeous red dress.  She wanted to show of the dress and just do a photo shoot for fun.  (Which I think is always a good idea!  So often we stop photos after senior portraits and don’t get anything until our weddings.  But what about that time in between?  I digress…)  Anyhow, Jeni really loves classic Hollywood so we decided on that kind of a style to show of the dress and give Jeni a timeless set of images for this wonderful time in life.

We also knew the session would be during “snow season” in the north country.  So we planned…if the weather cooperated… to do a red coat look for snowy winter photos.  We couldn’t have ordered better snow!!!! I was so excited.  The best kind of snow to photograph is “wet snow”.  When the temperature is hovering just below freezing the snow is really wet and results in giant fluffy flakes (as opposed to the tiny icy ones).  These big snowflakes show up perfectly in photographs.  The only downside is your model will be soaking wet in about 30 minutes…including their hair.  My advice, do it last and have a hood on a jacket to save the hair for a bit.  Or have the hair in an up-do or get an umbrella if that works with your look.  But definitely do it! It is so much fun and the results are stunning.

The Hollywood portion of the session was done in my local Potsdam photography studio.  I had never done this style of lighting and shooting before, but after a bit of research on technique I was super excited.  The idea is to use harsh butterfly lighting to mimic stage lights.  Traditionally a Fresnel lens is used, but if you don’t have one of those you can use a 20-degree or 30-degree grid on your light.  I did a combination of the 20 degree grid or a 12x12 soft box on a boom arm with or without fill reflectors depending on the amount of shadow I wanted in the shot.  It was so much fun!!! We put Etta James on a Pandora station and just had a blast creating these Hollywood images.  Jeni was a fantastic model and really created mood in the images.  We discovered the angle of the lights made it really hard for her to see me behind the camera so she had to act out the poses without seeing my instruction.  (Which is just me waving my hands and acting like a puppet a lot behind the camera anyhow. Lol)

It was absolutely a fantastic photography session and I am so happy to share it with you all.  Please be sure to go all the way to the bottom to see her album and feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think.
