Woodsy Potsdam ProposalWoodsy Potsdam Proposal for Chelsea and Zane Potsdam Based Photographer: Natalie’s Studio| Proposal Portraits Less than a year ago I had the pleasure of helping to organize a surprise proposal for a good friend of mine. But before I get to that story… a few thoughts. It always amazes me how my profession as a photographer is so much more than taking a photo. My job leads me to amazing relationships and bonds that are the real foundation of what I do. When I create artwork for others it is…and always has been …about love. And it never fails that some sessions lead to the greatest relationships with my clients. I photographed Chelsea for her high school senior graduation back when I had just opened my studio in Copenhagen NY. We had a great time and I knew right away she was a salt of the earth kind of person. Then we ended up going to church together. When Chelsea started attending Clarkson University she knew we had apartments up in Potsdam and rented the apartment directly across from the one Matt and I live in. It was fantastic. She had her dog Daisy and we had just gotten our puppy Copper. They became amazing friends, and Chelsea and I did too. When she needed breaks from studying or school work and I needed breaks from editing photos we would text each other and take the two dogs out to play. We had tons of great conversation about all sorts of topics and just life in general. But of course we also talked about boys. So when she told me about Zane I was pretty excited for her. He seemed so genuine and a true gentleman from all the stories Chelsea told me. It made me reminisce about when Matt and I were first dating in college and what a special and unique time that is. I was so happy for Chelsea, she really deserved an amazing man and they just seemed to fit together perfectly. I actually remember the first time I got to meet Zane. I had heard so much and I was honestly pretty excited to get to chat with him in person. He was just perfect for Chelsea! I loved how easy going and confident he was. They really are the perfect match and it is easy to see. They went together seamlessly. Soon Zane was around whenever he could be and it was always a pleasure to hang out with him. I was over the moon happy for them both. So the secret proposal…Zane contacted me and told me he wanted to propose but he wanted to make it a surprise and photograph it. I love surprises like this so I was all in and pretty excited. We decided I would nonchalantly get Chelsea to agree to model for me for a practice photo session. I told her I needed to photograph another couple using the land around our apartments but wanted to practice to find good spots. I tried to suggest that it would be really nice if I had another couple that I could practice with. Well... Zane “happened” to be coming up that weekend and she said she would ask him if he wouldn’t mind. Meanwhile Zane and I had been working together in the background planning all of this. I love surprises but they are a bit tricky to pull off sometimes. There were several things that we had to convince Chelsea without letting her know something was up. For example; it was going to rain but we HAD to do the practice session that day because I didn’t have any other time. We went around and did some little shoots in different areas of the property. Zane and I were so excited it was hard to keep a straight face. But we got some beautiful portraits of the two of them. It makes my heart race just thinking about it. At the end of the session I asked if they would step apart and then walk up to each other and kiss. Zane dropped to one knee and pulled the ring out of his sock. (He had to hide it there because it would have shown in his pocket.) It was so sweet. I am not going to lie.. I cried a little behind my camera. I feel so unbelievably blessed to have been part of this amazing moment. I have watched Chelsea grow from a teenager into a wonderful and amazing young woman with a huge heart and amazing work ethic. Chelsea and Zane are so perfect together and I am so happy for them. They are both smart, hard working and loving people that I am so glad to know. I wish I could be there on their wedding day this weekend. Even though I can’t attend I will be thinking of them and be there in spirit. I am proud to know them both and am so very excited for the next chapter in their love story. As they build their house and enter into their new jobs and grow their family I know so many amazing things are in their future. Chelsea and Zane, I am so very happy for you both and I don’t have to wish you and luck or love because I know you two are rock solid and will be there for each other through it all. Truly remember to take time for each other, listen more than you speak and always put the other first. I am SO happy for you two. I hope you have an amazing wedding day celebration. But remember the wedding is just a day and the marriage is forever.
