What to Wear for your Engagement Photos

A Few Tips to Prepare for your Engagement Photo Session

1. Be Practical: Dress for Style, Comfort, Location and Weather
Your engagement shoot should be a reflection of who you are. You must be comfortable in your clothes and they should be appropriate for the location and weather; so that you can focus on each other and not your outfit. Make sure you are comfortable in what you choose, if you’re not comfortable it will be noticeable in the pictures. Also, wear appropriate shoes for the location. And always dress for the weather, you don't want to be shivering in the photos if you have a winter engagement photo shoot.

2. Dress to Coordinate With Your Surroundings (In Style & Color)
If you're thinking about an active shoot, think casual and good foot ware. You don't want to be wearing high heels and an evening gown while we romp through a field. If jeans and boots are more your thing, don't be afraid to stick to what works. Or if we are going to a downtown, feel free to dress it up a bit and wear your favorite heels or a little black dress.

Tip: Choose neutrals or match the colors in your outfit to the background. It will make the image look cohesive. (ie. If we are going to a red barn or it is autumn, have a little bit of red in your outfit. Or if it is spring and green, wear something with greens, blues or with a floral pattern on it. )

3. Solid Muted or Subdued Tones Work Well. Neutrals Are Always Timeless!
The focus of the photos is on your face, not your outfit. You want the outfit to look good but it should complement you, not steal the show. Similar tones for your top and bottom will make you look taller and thinner (ie. a navy top with dark jeans will make you look taller than with light jeans.) I love muted tones that coordinate such as tans, whites, peaches and pinks. Or you can go darker and do greys & blacks or jeans, navy’s and olive greens.

TIP: Muted colors will always tend to match the décor in your home. Making your photos look great on your walls.

TIP: If you don't like neutrals go with colors you decorate with.

4. Thinking of Color Instead?
Color can help show off your personality. But keep the location in mind when choosing brighter colors. Try to complement the surrounds. See how the brides brown belt goes well with the brown background. Her color is bright, but not florescent. (Very flashy colors will make you look bigger)

Tip: If you both decide to wear colorful outfits, consider taking a look at the color wheel. You can’t go wrong with complementary colors.

5. Coordinate-But you don’t need to be “matchy-matchy”
These outfits aren't at all matchy-matchy, but there's a subtle color coordination that feels balanced and easy. While you don't want to look like twins, you do want the photo to feel even. The same goes for how dressy you’re planning to be; if you’re going for a formal look, then both of you need to be formal.

Tip if choosing a print or pattern always balance it with your partner in a solid color.

6. Ladies, do your nails.

We might take a photo with your hands.

7. Be You

Most important, be you! This is about you and your relationship. Don't be afraid to Incorporate elements of your favorite hobbies or things that are special to you...like maybe where you met.
