Steam Punk, Old School and Tim Burton Unique Senior Photo Session {Meggan}

I am very excited to share this photo shoot with all of you.  It is definitely one of the most unique sessions I’ve had and I am very proud of the way it turned out.  I am also very proud of Meggan and what a wonderful job she did; not only at the session but with all the curation and wardrobe planning she did. 

Meggan’s photo shoot is a really good example of how important a consultation is.  When Meggan and her mom came for the consult she and I hit it off right away.  We chatted about lots of ideas of things that she liked and how she likes to push the boundaries, but not go over them.  I felt like every idea Meggan and I talked about we could both see the same vision in our minds.  It was so much fun!  We wanted to illustrate the concept of how photography can personify you in ways you only dream of. 

Do you ever find when you are reading a good and you daydream of being another versions of yourself?  Maybe you’re an elf, a warrior, a spy or maybe you can tame dragons… I for one would love to ride a dragon.  You get to dream of these things but you never really get to feel part of them.  (Except maybe on Halloween)  But with Meggan’s photo shoot we brought those ideas to life.  And there is something truly amazing about seeing yourself on film in that persona.  The right wardrobe, the right set and perfect lighting can all bring it to life.  And then capture it on film and you will always have an amazing image of yourself; or your “other self”.

For Meggan’s session we curated 3 distinct sets.  First was stea punk.  Meggan did a fantastic job of creating a spot on steampunk outfit for the session.  All the details from the gears on her shoes, the feather in her hat and even her goggles really created a perfect steampunk look.  We used a sculpture at Clarkson University as our backdrop since it would give us the industrial look we were going for.  The I-beams, bolts and bricks lended perfectly to the set for our steampunk inspired part of our session.  I was particularly proud of the lighting because it was a bright sunny day and I needed  to darken the background to give the right mood.  But a powerful Einstein light equipped with a beauty dish on a boom arm allowed me  to overpower the sun and get the look I wanted right in camera.  It is her favorite part of the photo shoot and I can certainly see why.

We also wanted to highlight Meggan’s love of physics.  So we planned a old school room look for her to give a studious vibe.  I was able to find an old style school desk from a friend that we used for the session.  That coupled with a chalkboard background, old wood floor and some old books and we had ourselves an old room school look.  Meggan’s outfit  gave the look of a classic school teacher of days gone by.

Our last set was pretty exciting!  And certainly something I have never shot before.  Meggan wanted to have a Tim Burton inspired set.  And while we were looking for inspiration we came across a movie poster for  Snow White (illustrated in Tim Burton Style)  It provided the inspiration we needed and we started planning from there.  It evolved into a dark night set with rock walls and even a black curly tree Meggan made herself.  Meggan coupled her prom dress with some capes she had for the perfect look.  Then of course we had to add a fog machine to give it the final touch.  A blue gel to show off the fog and we were in business.  We had a blast on this set!  Although we did have to break several times to clear all the fog out of the studio.
